Well today was a super cool day in the life of a working bass player. I received my first official bass lesson from a man named, Chris Maresh, who is local bad ass bass player around town. Chris plays with a number of artists including, Eric Johnson, David Grissom, Monte Montgomery, and many more…
I met Chris at the Saxon Pub after going every week to hear David Grissom play and I asked if he was willing to met up at some point and give me a few tips and he agreed.
So, after a few weeks we finally nailed down the day to get together and that day was today!
Anyway, it was a dream come true getting to play with a pro player of that caliber and was a real treat to see him play up close and personal. He also really helped me understand bass soloing and recommended a bunch of cool exercises with the metronome to keep me on task. He practices with his metronome daily so I ordered a new, digital metronome today.
Hopefully, we’ll met up again soon and continue on the never ending learning curve that is the bass guitar.
On a side note, jammin’ with Chris on Eric Johnson’s, Zap, was especially cool..we were trading licks and things while each of us played the tune. What a treat! Zap was really the first rock song I ever heard with a bass solo courtesy of Roscoe Beck. It was awesome!
