Played a fun gig last night with Marcus Morales at the Saxon Pub. The Saxon Pub, which opened it’s doors in 1990, is one of those Austin venues that every band dreams of playing. The place has a very rich history and has served as “The Place” for local celeb musicians to play.
Willie Nelson drops by from time to time, Los Lonely Boys, Kris Kristofferson, W.C. Clark, Gary Clark Jr., Joe Ely, Omar Dykes, Bob Schneider still plays there every week, David Grissom also has a weekly residency as well as The Resentments, since 2002, which has included legendary players such as Stephen Bruton, John Dee Graham, Hal Ketchum, David Holt, Bruce Hughes, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Jeff Plankenhorn, John Chipman and Miles Zuniga. Anyway, It only took me 35 years or so, but I’m finally able to say that I’ve played at The Saxon Pub!
Fastball was playing their new album release show for their new record, Help Machine, which was released the day before. Also, the band Deep Blue Something, with the big hit from 1995, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, were there as well. They are opening for Fastball on a 3 day Texas tour which includes Waco and The Colony.
We didn’t go on until after both bands had played, around 11:30 pm or so. The crowd really thinned out after Fastball so we only played to a handful of folks. I’m learning that the later you play, the lighter the crowd is for sure, unless you’re a bigger band and even then, it’s hard to get anyone to stay out past midnight. Anyway, it was super fun none the less…we sounded and played great. The band included Marcus on guitar, myself on bass, Frank on drums and Tom on keys. Our set included the following songs.
- Travelin’ Shoes
- Alive and Well
- Tetherbound
- Orthopod
- Go Ahead and Stay Asleep
- Waves
- Damned if You Do
- Change
